Heat Wave 2009

Seems that Mother Nature is following the whole change of seasons thing to a tee this year. Not only did June 21 mark the beginning of Summer in terms of the Summer Solstice (and Father's Day), it marked the change from pleasant weather to stinking hot weather.

For about four weeks the air conditioning did not come on. Now, it's on a lot. We went from a very comfortable 22 Celsius to life-draining 34 Celsius (41 if you include the humidex).

I want the humidity to be gone. Now.

Wild Weather

Well that was interesting. The torrential downpour included hail, lots of it. Some hail was an inch in diameter.

Corbin and Jeremy stood by the front window in awe of the power of the storm. Then I told them there is hail. Jeremy had no idea what I was talking about. I opened the door and grabbed a ball of ice and gave it to Jeremy. He was in awe. About 15 or 20 minutes later, the storm was over. The sun was out and it was warm.

I went to outside to survey the damage and the lawn was littered with hail. I decided to get the hose and wash all the gunk of our driveway. Part way through, the boys put on their bathing suits and decided that they would have me spray them with the hose. I obliged.

They were soaking wet. But they had fun. And my driveway was clean.

Victoria Day Weekend

The only plans we had this weekend was to go shopping in Detroit on Saturday. And we did that.

Took about 40 minutes to get through the tunnel and about 5 minutes to get to Fairlane Green at I-94 and Oakwood. After buying some clothes and household goods at Target and checking out Best Buy we headed down Ford Road towards Haggerty to check out where the IKEA is and what is around in the area.

We were also looking for a place to eat - plenty of Applebee's, McDonalds and Burger Kings. Eventually we found a Ruby Tuesdays at Canton Centre and Michigan Ave and enjoyed an excellent early supper. Tina had a steak, Jeremy had mac and cheese, Corbin had mini-burger and I had a rib and shrimp combo. The ribs were excellent - juicy and falling off the bone. Everyone enjoyed their meal and we headed back to Canada.

I filled the van up with some gas at the Ambassador Bridge. It was about a 10 minute wait at Canadian customs. We declared our purchase and were sent on our merry way home.

The rest of weekend was kind of a bust because of the uncertain weather. No gymnastics for Jeremy on Sunday because he was coughing and feeling under the weather. Tina and the boys went through the toys and boxed some up for Babcia's place and some for the garbage. I didn't do much on Sunday.

Monday, the weather was a wee bit better. Tina took the boys to Lacasse Park in Tecumseh and I cut the grass (which needs to replaced) and did some chores outside.

Not a bad weekend. Relaxing.

Snow?

Spring? Check. April? Check. The middle of April? Check. Snow in the middle of April? What the?

It started snowing this morning. Fortunately, it had rained all night so the ground was wet which meant the snow was not sticking. But still, snow?

But early in the afternoon, the snow had stopped and the sun popped out. It was weird. Any hard surface dried up, making it appear as if had never rained or snowed. Very weird.

Well That Was Fun

A major snowstorm hit southern Ontario Saturday and Sunday. It dumped about 20 cm of snow from Windsor to Brantford.

The storm finally let up around 4:00 pm, so I rallied the troops and we were off. My mom cried - she is always worried. We left my mom's at 4:30 or so.

The 403 was not bad - one lane with most vehicles driving between 70 and 80 km/h. The 401 in Woodstock was marginally better. We travelled at around 80 km/h except when we had to slow down to 30 or so for snowploughs.

We pulled off in London to grab a bite to eat. 20 or so minutes later, we were back on the 401

West of London, there it was very gusty and lots of blowing snow. Driving wasn't that bad until we stopped dead in our tracks about 3 km east of Tilbury. 40 minutes later we were moving very slowly - good thing I filled up with gas on Saturday. It took one hour to move 7 km - to just west of Tilbury. Two travel lanes were available and we arrived in snow covered Windsor around 10:30 pm.

Six hours for a trip that normally takes three hours. Not too bad. Saw plenty of vehicles including tractor trailers in the median and the side of the road. Jeremy was oblivious to the conditions around us and Corbin was too busy playing his Nintendo before changing to watching some movies on the DVD player.

Glad to be home safe and sound.

Summer is Back For a Limited Time Engagement

30 degrees Celsius in October? This weather rollercoaster is crazy. Good thing is that it's supposed to be hot all weekend, which means that we can pack lightly for our trip to Kalahari Waterpark this weekend.

Who Ordered This Crazy Weather?

Tuesday was cool, cloudy and dreary - it looked and felt like a fall day. Wednesday was very sunny - not a cloud in the sky - and warm - all in all, a wonderful day to not be in an office. Thursday turned into a hot and muggy day - a good day to have air conditioning.

It's May Already

Wow, April flew right by. It was cooler than expected, though we did not get much rain. Hopefully, the weather will warm up over the next few weeks so I can work on getting the vegetable garden ready and start planting perennials in the flowerbeds.

Spring is back...we think

Yesterday was very windy and very gusty. I watched Jeremy's Little Tikes Slide literally slide across the patio - when I woke up this morning, it had been moved some 20 or so feet away from it's original location.

Today is a gorgeous day. Sunny with no clouds and hardly a breeze. The temperature is 13C and climbing. They are predicting high teens and low 20s this weekend - just in time for me to cut the grass.
