The only plans we had this weekend was to go shopping in Detroit on Saturday. And we did that.
Took about 40 minutes to get through the tunnel and about 5 minutes to get to Fairlane Green at I-94 and Oakwood. After buying some clothes and household goods at Target and checking out Best Buy we headed down Ford Road towards Haggerty to check out where the IKEA is and what is around in the area.
We were also looking for a place to eat - plenty of Applebee's, McDonalds and Burger Kings. Eventually we found a Ruby Tuesdays at Canton Centre and Michigan Ave and enjoyed an excellent early supper. Tina had a steak, Jeremy had mac and cheese, Corbin had mini-burger and I had a rib and shrimp combo. The ribs were excellent - juicy and falling off the bone. Everyone enjoyed their meal and we headed back to Canada.
I filled the van up with some gas at the Ambassador Bridge. It was about a 10 minute wait at Canadian customs. We declared our purchase and were sent on our merry way home.
The rest of weekend was kind of a bust because of the uncertain weather. No gymnastics for Jeremy on Sunday because he was coughing and feeling under the weather. Tina and the boys went through the toys and boxed some up for Babcia's place and some for the garbage. I didn't do much on Sunday.
Monday, the weather was a wee bit better. Tina took the boys to Lacasse Park in Tecumseh and I cut the grass (which needs to replaced) and did some chores outside.
Not a bad weekend. Relaxing.

41 Year Old Toilet and More
After about three or four changes to our appointment time, the plumber (actually a plumber and a co-op student from St. Clair College) from Plumbing Now came and went. In about 2 or so hours, they replaced the toilet (and flange and shut-off valve), the shower tap and cartridge, shut-off valves and hoses to the washer, removed and capped a cold water tap and repaired a very slow leak in the copper pipe.
Our 41 year old toilet was replaced with a Kohler Cimmaron (elongated bowl with a soft close seat). The bowl looks wonderful and operates efficiently - and no longer wobbles when you sit on it. It only uses 1.6 gallons per flush, so our water bill should be reduced.
The shower tap no longer leaks when you have a shower which should improve water pressure at the shower head and should also reduce our water bill.
The old hot and cold water shut-off valves for the washer were replaced with quarter-turn valves. The old valves wouldn't close. The rubber hoses - no idea how old they were - were replaced with braided hoses.
The leak in the copper tubing was fixed - the plumber removed some plumbing and replaced it with new copper. And the water tap that Jeremy recently discovered is gone - so no more water streams on the floor.
According to Tina, the plumbers were courteous and efficient. All the work is guaranteed. Given that most of the plumbing in the house is original, we signed up for a premium service that gives priority when calling a plumber for a monthly fee. During the first 30 months the monthly fee is applies against any work we have done. With our varying work schedules, it's a small price to pay for some piece of mind - especially for Tina.

An Evening in Lighthouse Cove
Whenever we have one of our mothers down to watch the kids, Tina and I try to get out to Lighthouse Cove - about 30 minutes east of Windsor at the mouth of the Thames River on Lake St. Clair - and have a nice dinner on the outdoor patio at the Lighthouse Inn.
On the patio you have a nice and relaxing view of the lake and river and the boat traffic. Despite the heat, the gently breeze coming off the lake made for a pleasant dining experience.
Tina and I started with mushrooms stuffed with a crab cake mixture in a garlic butter sauce. We then had the Captains' Plate which consists of generous portions of Lake Erie Perch and Pickerel and breaded shrimp on their own separate plate and your choice of side dish - I had a baked potato and Tina had rice.
The meal was excellent - there really is more than enough seafood for two - and the atmosphere was totally relaxing. We highly recommend having a meal at the Lighthouse Inn.

Northern Vacation - Day 4
Sault Ste. Marie to Gaylord
Seems the boys like to sleep in when we are in hotels, so Tina and I take turns going to breakfast, which is a nice break from the hectic 'hotel life'. Tina went down first and brought some stuff up for the boys, who were just starting to wake up.
Each Holiday Inn Express has a standard line of breakfast items - cinnamon rolls, boiled eggs, bread, bagels, cereals and drinks. Some have additional items like omelettes, sausages, or local specialities like biscuits and gravy. Tina told me than had omelettes.
I went down and had a couple of warm omelettes, coffee, OJ, banana, toast and an omelette. It was tasty and filling. The boys finished their breakfast - cereal, oatmeal and whatever else Tina brought them. We packed up and checked out and headed to the Soo Locks Boat Tour dock. We arrived just before the 10:00 am departure. It was a overcast day - much cooler compared to when Tina and I took the same tour about six years ago. The boys seemed excited.
We arrived in the lock and Corbin was mesmerized by the rising water level. A friendly employee of the dock shook Corbin's hand when the boat was rising above the top of the dock. Jeremy was confused as to what was happening but seemed interested in the boat ride. About two hours later we arrived back at the dock. We were going to play some mini-golf, but Corbin had a small breakdown at the gift shop, so we nixed that adventure for now.
The last time Tina and I were in the Soo, we happened upon a small Italian restaurant, Ang-Gio's, on the main road into town. It's a fairly non-descript building in a plaza, but the food was amazing. We were hoping that the place was open for lunch - fortunately it was. I ordered fettuccine alfredo with fried mushrooms, Tina ordered fettuccine carbonara, Corbin ordered spagehtti, and Jeremy had a grilled cheese. We also ordered garlic bread with cheese. Our orders also came with a side salad.
The food came out quick and hot. The sauces are homemade and are downright sinful. They are rich but not in the usual overpowering way. I ate all my plate - there were plenty of mushrooms. Even the boys finished their meals. Tina was happy again. So we headed down to Mackinaw City.
It is about an hour's drive to Mackinaw City from the Soo. The drive was pleasant - sunny and warm with little traffic. We parked on the main road and proceeded to find a restroom because Corbin needed to go. With that out of the way we checked out the shops and bought a few things like candies and popcorn and some toys for the boys. After spending about an hour, we headed down to Gaylord, which is about one hour south of Mackinaw City.
We stayed at another Holiday Inn Express in Gaylord. We checked in and set out to find the Bavarian Falls adventure golf (mini-golf) - one of the things on this trip is that we were going to play mini-golf with the boys. After a round trip around the town, we found it. We got out clubs and balls and proceeded to play 18 holes of thoroughly enjoyable family time mini-golf. Corbin and Jeremy had to be told to sit a few times. Jeremy would have gotten a hole-in-one if Corbin didn't stop his ball from going in the hole. Everyone had a good time.
Before stopping at the hotel, Tina went to the Wal-Mart behind the hotel and got some pop and munchies. Back at the hotel, Tina supervised Corbin while he swam and I watched Jeremy.
