Corbin and Jeremy had their last day of school today. For Corbin that meant finishing Grade 5 and for Jeremy it meant he would be in Grade 1 come September.
Both boys seemed to enjoy school this year. Corbin played on the junior Basketball and Soccer teams. Academically, Corbin had a successful year. His reading is coming along and he seems to learning something. Jeremy had some difficulties, partially a result of vision issues, issues that we hope will correct themselves with glasses.
We have no idea who their teachers will be for 2009/2010. Several teachers and educational assistants have transferred to other schools. Lets hope they are willing to work with us.

Soccer Update
St. Alexander's remains unbeaten with a record of three wins and one tie.
Corbin has played in every game as a forward. He goes to every practise and is learning different moves. Going to soccer camp paid off.
Tina has become a soccer mom. Jeremy just wants to go home.
Keep up the good work Corbin.

Bend It Like Corbin
Corbin has been trying out for the soccer team. And he made it. Congratulations.
Recently he was sick and stayed at home, but all he could think about was the soccer practice. The coach said that anyone that dedicated should be on the soccer team
Corbin plays on the forward line and is enjoying is success.

Back To School
Three words that most parents love hearing. Let me say it again. Back To School.
Today, Corbin began Grade 5 and Jeremy was starting Senior Kindergarten.
It was a big day for Corbin because not only was he in Grade 5, but he has a new teacher, a new classroom (on the other, or 'big kid', side of the school) and a new EA. He handled the day well.
He gave his teacher from last year, Ms. Mayea, a hug and then started talking to kids and saying hi. When he saw Ms. Johnston, his EA for the past 3 or so years, he didn't run up to her. He walked up and gave her a hug.
The big change for Jeremy this year was that he would be attending in the afternoon instead of the morning. A lot of the kids in the morning were sad to hear that. A few kids from last years JK class were in Jeremy's SK class, but for the most part, he will be making new friends this year.
The day went well for both boys. And that is all we can ask for.

Last Day of School 2008
Today was Corbin's and Jeremy's last day of school.
Both boys had a successful school year. Corbin made great progress in math, music, reading and french. In fact, the school year seemed 'ordinary' - save for a few episodes. Tina and I tend to agree that that is a good thing. Awesome job Corbin - who is already talking about Grade 5 (a new teacher, a new EA and in a new wing of the school - should be fun in September).
Jeremy learnt most of the alphabet, number between 1 and 10, colours, shapes, months and the days of the week. He had some rough patches, but managed to work through them. Jeremy made lots of new friends and looks forward to SK in September. Another change in September is switching from morning to afternoon.
Thanks to Ms. Mayea, Ms. Coolen, Ms. Johnston, Mr. Carter, Ms. Thompson, Mr. Bradacs, Mrs. Marshall and Ms. Ouellette.

It's Been A Few Weeks
It's becoming hectic around the house. All of us have been sick - some worse than others - over the past few weeks. I got beat good and had to take three days off from work. Tina has an ear infection that is finally improving.
Tina's mom, Bev, is down for two weeks. That meant moving Guinea, the Guinea Pig, from the living room to Corbin's room. Tina sat down with Corbin and laid down the ground rules. So far, it seems to be working out, though Guinea has become more vocal and more demanding with all the traffic walking by in the hallway.
Jeremy is settled in his 'new' room, which also doubles as our 'office'. The room needs a good spring cleaning and I have to move Jeremy's stuff from Corbin's room into Jeremy's room. He doesn't seem to be touching anything he shouldn't be, but I'm sure that will change in time.
I finally got around to planting some more perennials in the Rivard corner flower bed. Tina provided much needed assistance since I also bought four flats of annuals to fill in the blank areas - hoping to stop people from cutting through the bed. She has a good green thumb. Eventually, I want the entire bed filled with perennials. I'm looking at a three to four year time frame.
I also got more mulch and topped off the Rivard bed, hopefully locking in the moisture and soften up the soil some. There were some deep and long cracks in the soil last year - yes it gets that dry here and the clay soil does not help. My next project is to relocate the sand box and have some concrete poured beside the garage to
Having a couple of flats of annuals leftover, I asked Tina if she could plant them in the vegetable garden flowerbed. She said yes and she did an awesome job. But she was achy for a few days. Even Jeremy helped her out by watering each plant with his small watering can. Tina tells me that he wants a bigger watering can, but not as big as Daddy's because that would be too heavy.
Jeremy and Corbin are both in gymnastics - on different days - and doing well. Corbin has a few more horseback riding and tennis lessons.
At school, Corbin received a Student of the Month award for Determination. He was very proud of this achievement. Corbin is doing well. He does times tables in the games room and does very well. Jeremy is, well, Jeremy. He knows more of his letters and his attention span has improved since the surgery and glasses. But boys will be boys.
Recently, Tina accompanied Jeremy as a chaperon for a class trip to the Lazee G Ranch. The kids got to see horse and other animals. I'll have to post some pictures from that outing.

Good News From School
This afternoon Tina got a call from the school. At first, she was hesitant to pick up the phone - most phone calls from the school are not positive.
But she decided to answer. It was Corbin's Grade 4 teacher. She just wanted to let us know what an amazing week Corbin had and talk about academics. She was finishing off report cards and noticed that Corbin went from a C to a B in math. Not bad for a kid who says school is "hard" and "boring".
She was proud of Corbin's achievements. Tina was stunned.
Keep up the good work Corbin.

Corbin's Speech
As part of the Grade 4 curriculum, students are expected to give a speech about a topic they are familiar with - the whole 'public speaking' thing that I remember I had to do to.
It took Tina and Corbin several weeks to nail down the topic: his guinea pig. After that, Tina was concerned that Corbin would have problems with the speech. It got to the point where Tina was more worried about the speech then Corbin was. I told Tina to take a step back and let Corbin work out the speech. If he fails at school, so be it. Tina saw the logic in that statement and let Corbin take the lead (with some prompting, of course).
Tina decided to use cue cards with short phrases and images related to guinea. Corbin's teacher said the key thing was not to read the cards, but to speak to the class.
Well, according to Corbin's EA, he did an awesome job with his speech. There were no problems. Corbin's take on his speech was, as usual, entirely different and low key. I saw the cue cards on the table and asked Corbin some questions. He had essentially memorized the entire speech - his memorization skills are top notch.
Congrats Corbin on a job well done (and thank you to Tina for taking the time to assist Corbin).

The Wheels On The Bus...
Yet another first for Jeremy today: take the bus from JK to Franco Sol (his daycare).
During the JK class today, all the students received 'training' about the bus, how to sit on the bus, how to get off the bus and how to cross the street.
Jeremy's bus trip was problem free. He sits with best friend Noah. He spends about 40 minutes on the bus - despite his daycare being located across the street from his elementary school. Mind you, the entrance to Franco Sol is located on busy main street.
In the end, the 40 minute trip works for us, since Jeremy arrives at daycare at around 12 Noon. That means we don't have to pick him up until 4:00 pm, thereby only having to pay for half-a-day of daycare.

First Full Half-Day In JK
Today was Jeremy's first full half-day in JK with the complete classroom. He was very excited. He had a great day and made some new friends, including Noah, his 'best' friend - for the time being.

Jeremy and Junior Kindergarten
Jeremy had his 'visit' in the Junior Kindergarten class at St. Alexander's (he keeps calling it "Corbin's School"). He was very very very very very excited. He had has backpack ready (which is about half his size).
Tina and I walked him and Corbin to school. We took Jeremy to his classroom, where we met Ms. Thompson. He was the first student to arrive. He dropped his backpack and took a beeline to the toys. We had to literally beg him to come over and give us goodbye hugs and kisses.

Corbin and Grade 4
It's the day after Labour Day and that can only mean one thing: back to school. Yup, it's time to get the backpacks, lunches and 20 other things ready.
Today Corbin starts Grade 4. That's six years at St. Alexander's. Time does fly. Here is this year's version of the annual 'stand by the kitchen door' picture.
Corbin looks excited about going to school. At least his teachers will be familiar. His Grade 4 teacher was his science last year and his French teacher was his Grade 3 teacher. Should make things easier for Corbin and all those involved.
Jeremy doesn't start till Friday with a 2-hour 'visit'. Half-day Junior Kindergarten starts Monday morning.

Goodbye Grade 3
Today was Corbin's last day of school - a week early because he is going to Camp Winston this weekend. Mrs. Murphy was outside waiting with Corbin - she gave him a big hug and kiss, thanked Tina and myself for our support and wished Corbin a great time at camp. I thanked Mrs. Murphy for all her help.
It was an awesome year for Corbin. No suspensions. No detentions. Only one or two phone calls. His reading ability is remarkable. Thanks to the staff at St. Alexander's School for your support. See you in September - hope you are all ready for Jeremy ;)
